Sri Lanka's Water Sports Capital

Nestled between the Indian Ocean and the Bentota River on Sri Lanka's southwest coast, Bentota is the water sports capital of Sri Lanka. Bentota's sheltered lagoon and coast offer virtually every water sport: jet skiing, water skiing, wakeboarding, banana boat rides, windsurfing, kitesurfing, and deep sea fishing. Operators are found directly on the beach with competitive prices.

2. Bentota Beach

A long, wide arc of golden sand with calm, shallow water ideal for swimming. Relatively quiet and uncluttered compared to busier south coast resorts — backed by swaying palms and upscale hotels.

3. Madu River Safari

A vast, shallow lagoon with 64 small mangrove islands. A motorboat tour is a must-do — glide through mangrove tunnels, spot monitor lizards, dozens of bird species, visit a tiny island monastery, and stop at a "cinnamon island" to see spice harvesting and buy fresh products.

4. Sea Turtle Conservation

Several important sea turtle hatcheries on Bentota beach collect eggs to incubate safely from predators. Visit to see tanks of hatchlings at various stages, learn about conservation, and sometimes witness a turtle release at dusk when tiny hatchlings enter the sea for the first time.

5. Geoffrey Bawa's Legacy

• Brief Garden: A fantastical 4-acre garden with sculptures, ponds, and meandering paths — designed with Bawa's input by his friend Bevis Bawa.
• Lunuganga Estate: Bawa's own weekend retreat, 50 years in the making — now a boutique hotel open for tours. A masterwork of landscape architecture.

6. Ayurveda & Wellness

Bentota has become one of the leading Ayurveda destinations in Sri Lanka. Several established resorts offer authentic, medically supervised programs — from relaxation massages to full multi-week rejuvenation programs.

Practical Travel Tips

• Getting There: About 1.5–2 hours from Colombo via the Southern Expressway.
• Best Season: November to April for water sports. May–September can make seas rough.
• Day Trip: Easily combined with Galle Fort or Hikkaduwa as a day trip from Colombo.
