The Medieval Capital of Sri Lanka
If Anuradhapura is the spiritual cradle, Polonnaruwa is the artistic masterpiece. Sri Lanka's second capital (11th–13th centuries) is a UNESCO World Heritage site with remarkably well-preserved monuments — intricate stone carvings, massive brick structures, and the finest Buddhist art in the country.
Four magnificent Buddha statues carved from a single slab of granite:
The most concentrated collection of ancient buildings in Sri Lanka. The Vatadage (Circular Relic House) is the highlight — a small stupa surrounded by four Buddhas and concentric stone pillars with exquisitely preserved moonstones and guardstones.
A massive man-made tank so vast it looks like an ocean. Built by King Parakramabahu I, whose motto was: "Let not even a drop of rain water go to the sea without benefiting man." A perfect sunset walk or bike ride along the bund.
Polonnaruwa is home to three monkey species including the energetic Toque Macaque — the stars of Disney's documentary "Monkey Kingdom", filmed right here! Watch them playing on the ruins, but secure your food and bags.
A small stone bath cut into the shape of a blooming eight-petalled lotus flower. A perfect example of how the ancients combined utility with beauty.
