Sigiriya: The Lion Rock

The Eighth Wonder of the World

Sigiriya Lion Rock Fortress Sri Lanka

Rising dramatically from the central plains, the ancient rock fortress of Sigiriya is one of Sri Lanka's most breathtaking sights. This UNESCO World Heritage site was built in the 5th century by King Kashyapa and served as his royal palace and fortress. It stands nearly 200 metres high and dominates the jungle skyline for miles around.

The Climb to the Summit

The journey to the top involves approximately 1,200 steps attached to the sheer rock face. The climb is manageable for most people with average fitness. Along the way you will encounter the fortress's most famous features:

  • The Mirror Wall: Once polished so the king could see his reflection, now covered in ancient graffiti and verses from centuries of visitors.
  • The Sigiriya Frescoes: Halfway up, a sheltered gallery contains stunning paintings of beautiful women known as the 'Maidens of the Clouds'.
  • The Lion's Paws: At the final gateway to the summit, you walk between two gigantic carved lion's paws — how the fortress got its name.

The view from the top is spectacular — a 360-degree panorama of surrounding jungle, lakes, and the extensive royal gardens below.

The Alternative: Pidurangala Rock

For an incredible view of Sigiriya Rock itself, climb the nearby Pidurangala Rock. More rustic and less crowded, it is especially popular at sunrise when the first light hits the face of the Lion Rock.
