Trincomalee

Sri Lanka's Pristine East Coast Paradise

Trincomalee beach east coast Sri Lanka

Those who make the journey to Trincomalee on Sri Lanka's northeast coast are rewarded with something truly special — some of the finest beaches in Asia, remarkably uncrowded, with crystal-clear turquoise water and a fascinating blend of history, culture, and natural wonders.

1. Nilaveli Beach

Often listed among the most beautiful beaches in Asia — a long stretch of soft white sand and shallow, calm, impossibly blue water. Far less developed than the south coast, it has a pure, untouched quality. Best visited April to September (the east coast season) when the water is flat and perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

2. Koneswaram Temple (Swami Rock)

Perched dramatically on a 130-metre cliff jutting into the sea, this is one of Sri Lanka's most sacred Hindu sites — dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the ancient Pancha Ishwarams that once guarded the island. The views over the vast Indian Ocean from three sides are breathtaking.

3. Pigeon Island National Park

A short boat ride from Nilaveli. One of Sri Lanka's only two marine national parks — excellent snorkelling and diving with extensive coral reefs, Blacktip Reef Sharks resting on the sandy bottom (harmless to snorkellers), sea turtles, clownfish, and hundreds of reef fish species.

4. Whale Watching

The Trincomalee Bay season runs March to August — perfectly complementing Mirissa's November to April season. Blue Whales, Sperm Whales, and large pods of Spinner Dolphins are regularly sighted. The calmer waters of the bay make for a more comfortable experience than the open ocean.

5. Kanniya Hot Springs

Seven wells of naturally heated water 8km from Trincomalee town, each at a slightly different temperature. Locals believe the water has healing properties — dip a bucket and pour the warm water over yourself in the open-air bathing area. A uniquely unusual experience.

6. Fort Frederick

Built by the Portuguese in 1623 on the same headland as the Koneswaram Temple. A herd of spotted deer roams freely within the fort walls — surreal to watch deer grazing among ancient colonial cannons with the ocean far below.
